Par St Mary’s Methodist Church Access Audit

Par St Mary’s is situated at the top of Chapel Road, Par. Postcode PL24 2AE. Access is through a gate in the wall round the car park. We ask able bodied people to park in our car park outside the chapel gates, on the left as you go up Chapel Road.

The chapel is bounded on one side by residential properties, behind by a caravan park and on the third side by the railway line.

The Chapel

Our Methodist Church consists of a 19th century chapel which has been modernised inside – the pews in the main chapel have been removed and carpet and chairs put in. This now gives a flexible space. There is a gallery extending all the way round the main chapel. This still has the original pews. The organ is still here at the front of the worship area.

There is an entrance area which is accessible up a small, steep ramp. Stairs go up to the gallery on each side.

Behind the worship area there is a vestry which is sometimes used as a meeting room for small groups.

The Schoolroom (hall)

We have a large hall built in the 1960s, with a stage and a fully equipped kitchen.

The Link corridor

Linking the schoolroom with the chapel is a link corridor where the toilets are situated, including a disabled toilet. There is a door allowing access to the corridor which is suitable for wheelchairs.

The toilets are situated in the link corridor. We have male and female toilets and there is a disabled toilet, the door of which opens outwards. There is a red cord to pull for assistance. Taps are manually turned on and off. There is a door allowing access to the corridor which is suitable for wheelchairs. The disabled toilet also has baby changing facilities.

Sunday worship

The service is led from the front and hymns plus some other items are projected on a screen.

The original pulpit has been removed; we now have a small wooden movable one but usually those leading worship use a lectern. We have some large print hymn books and hymn books are always available for those who have trouble viewing the screen. Large print bibles are also available.

Music is usually played on the pipe organ in the gallery. There is also a piano which can be used.

The 24 bus service between Mevagissey and Fowey stops just round the corner from the chapel – under the railway bridge and round the corner coming from St Austell and in Par Green coming from Fowey and Tywardreath (cross over and go under the railway bridge to get to the chapel). It takes 20 minutes from St Austell and the buses are hourly.

Par Station is a 10-minute walk down a footpath alongside the railway (which can be full of puddles when it is wet). By car turn right down Eastcliffe Road, right into Par Green and we are just past the railway bridge up Chapel Road.

Our post code is PL24 2AE.

Car Park and Arrival

We have a free car park on the left hand side as you go up Chapel Road and there are a few parking spaces within the wall around the chapel although on busy occasions these are reserved for people with limited mobility. There may be some spaces on the right hand side of Chapel Road or in Par Green.

The car park is level and tarmacked and there is a slight slope into the chapel. There is wheelchair access into the chapel, or to the hall via the link corridor door.

There are emergency exits through the doors at the far end of the chapel. There are also exits through the front door, link corridor and hall.

Our nearest A & E department is at the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in Truro. There is a minor injuries unit at St Austell Community Hospital during the day.
